What Is an AI Agent? Plainly, and Without the Hype
An AI agent is software you give a goal to, that then works out the steps and does them, using tools you have granted it, starting on its own rather than when you ask. That is the whole idea. Everything else is detail.
The word is doing a lot of work in marketing right now, which is why it has stopped meaning much. Here it is without the hype.
What it is not
Most confusion comes from three near neighbours, and each is a genuinely useful thing in its own right.
Not a chatbot. A chatbot answers when spoken to. It has no standing job and nothing happens between your messages.
Not an automation. An automation is one trigger and one fixed action, every time, with no judgment. Excellent for work that never varies, and worth understanding as its own thing.
Not a prompt. A prompt is a single ask. A very good prompt is real work, it just has to be retyped, which means it only ever runs when you remember it.
What makes it an agent
Three things, and it needs all of them. A goal it is given rather than steps it is told, the means to act, and something other than you that starts it.
That is the short version of a test I teach as ITT: Instructions, Tools, Triggers. Three letters, about a minute to apply, and it survives a sales meeting.
One honest footnote for anyone studying toward a Claude certification: the industry definition is looser than mine. Anthropic counts anything that runs a loop with tools as an agent, trigger or no trigger. My three-part bar is the standard I hold my own agents to. Know both, and answer exam questions with theirs.
Why anyone cares
Because the arrangement changes what a person spends their day on. With a chatbot or a prompt, you are still the thing that starts the work and carries it between steps. With an agent, the work happens and you review it.
That is the actual shift, and it is smaller and more practical than the marketing suggests. It also means the useful first question is never "should we get agents." It is which single job would be better if it ran without you.
