Copilot or Claude for Business? Which One, and When
Copilot wins on proximity: it is already inside the files, the inbox and the meetings your team lives in. Claude wins on long documents and careful reasoning. And since Microsoft added Anthropic's models to Copilot, a lot of teams do not have to choose at all.
I train on both, which is the only reason this is worth reading. Almost every comparison you will find is written by somebody who sells one of them.
Where each one is genuinely stronger
Copilot is stronger when the work is already in Microsoft. Summarising the meeting you just left, drafting the reply in the thread, working the spreadsheet that is open. Nothing beats being in the room.
Claude is stronger on long, careful work. A hundred-page contract, a messy research pile, a document where a wrong detail matters. It holds more of the thing in view at once and it argues with itself before answering.
That difference explains most of the disappointment I see. Teams buy Copilot expecting the second and get the first, then conclude AI does not work for them.
The question changed
Microsoft now offers Anthropic models inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat and Copilot Studio. So the old framing, which product do we buy, is not the useful one any more for a team already on Microsoft 365.
The useful question is which model for which job, inside the surface people already have open. That is a training problem, and it is much cheaper to fix than a procurement decision.
On price, honestly
Microsoft 365 Copilot lists at $30 per user per month and sits on top of a Microsoft 365 license you are already paying for, which is what makes the all-in number bigger than it looks. Claude's team pricing is per seat with a seat minimum, so a very small team can end up paying for chairs nobody sits in.
Neither is expensive compared to the cost of a rollout nobody uses. That is the number worth watching, and it is the subject of its own entry.
How to actually decide
Take one real piece of work your team does weekly. Run it in both, same input, same instructions, and read the two outputs next to each other.
An hour of that settles arguments that otherwise run for a quarter.
