The short answer: most teams under 20 to 30 people don't need Enterprise. The real difference isn't the price, it's what happens to your data and who controls it. Here's how to actually decide.

Claude Team is built for small groups: a shared workspace, pooled usage, and simple admin controls, priced per seat with a modest seat minimum.

Claude Enterprise adds organization-wide governance: SSO and SCIM provisioning, audit logs, expanded context for larger shared knowledge bases, and enterprise-grade security controls.

The difference that actually matters for a small business isn't team size, it's whether you have a specific governance requirement Team can't meet yet.

When Team is the right call

If your team is under roughly 20 to 30 people, you don't have a formal SSO or identity requirement from IT or a client contract, and you're not trying to load a huge internal knowledge base into Claude's context, Team covers what you need. This describes most small businesses starting Claude adoption, including most of the ones I have worked with on day one.

When it's time to look at Enterprise

• A client contract or internal security policy requires SSO and SCIM and audit logging, not just password logins.
• You need to bring a large volume of internal documentation into Claude's working context, more than a Team workspace comfortably handles.
• Your compliance requirements need contractually documented security controls rather than plan defaults, and you'll verify the specifics (including where data lives) with Anthropic directly.

None of these are about headcount. A 12-person regulated business can need Enterprise on day one. A 40-person team with none of the above can stay on Team indefinitely.

The mistake to avoid

The cost and administrative overhead are real, and most of what actually drives adoption comes from the work around the tool rather than the plan tier: real workflows, real training, and a team that knows what to ask Claude. Write your governance requirements down before you shop, and the answer usually picks itself.
