Can You Use Claude Inside Microsoft Copilot? Yes

Microsoft added Anthropic's models to Microsoft 365 Copilot. You can now choose Claude in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Copilot Chat and Copilot Studio, instead of being handed whichever model Microsoft picked. Your admin has to turn it on first, and there is a data-handling detail worth reading before they do.

Most teams I work with have no idea this exists. They have been comparing Copilot against Claude as though it were a choice between two products, when for a lot of work it is now a dropdown.

What is actually available

Microsoft documents Anthropic models in the Microsoft 365 apps, and the model picker has been widening since the model-choice announcement. In practice that means a Claude option in the places people actually work: the Word document, the Excel workbook, the deck, Copilot Chat, and the agents you build in Copilot Studio. The Researcher agent can run on Claude too.

You are not switching products. You are staying inside the file you already have open and choosing which model does the thinking.

The setting that has to be on

It is off until an admin enables it in the Microsoft 365 admin center. If your model picker has no Claude in it, that is almost always why, not a licensing problem.

Before that switch gets flipped, there is one detail worth reading properly. Microsoft is explicit that Anthropic models are hosted outside Microsoft-managed environments and are subject to Anthropic's terms rather than Microsoft's. It is a thing your security or compliance person needs to know before they find out from somebody else, not a warning you can shrug off.

What this actually changes for a team

It removes the argument. Most Copilot-versus-Claude debates inside a company are not really about models, they are about which tool people are allowed to open. When both live behind the same license, the conversation moves to the more useful question: which model for which job.

That is a training question, not a procurement one, and it is a much cheaper problem to solve.

Where to start

Pick one recurring piece of work that has been disappointing in Copilot. Long document analysis is the usual candidate. Run it again with Claude selected and compare the output side by side, on the same input, with the same instructions.
