You Can't Micromanage Claude, or You'll Never Succeed

I watched someone type "write me a subject line" into Claude last week. Just that. No context, no goal, no sense of who it was for. They got a subject line back. A fine one, generic, forgettable, and they moved on to the next tiny request like they were feeding coins into a machine.
That is the whole problem in one screenshot.
The vending machine mistake
Most people treat Claude like a vending machine. Insert task, get output, repeat. One line in, one line out, all day long. It feels productive because you're typing and something is happening. But you are capping the tool at exactly the size of your smallest thought.
Claude can hold a goal, reason through tradeoffs, research an approach, and build a plan. If you only ever hand it fragments, that is all you will ever get back: fragments.
I don't do that. Here's my actual framework, the one I use every single time I sit down to brief Claude on something real.
The framework
Start with the goal. Not the task. The goal. What does this actually need to accomplish, and for who. Not "write a landing page," but "I need someone who has never heard of PITL to understand in ten seconds why this is for them, not for enterprise people."
Tell it how you think about the problem. This is the part everyone skips. I explain my reasoning, my priorities, what matters more than what. If price and access matter more to me than polish, I say that. Claude cannot read your mind, but it can absolutely work inside your logic if you hand it over.
Tell it what you don't want. This is as important as the goal itself. No em dashes. No urgency language. No "consultant" anywhere near my copy. I say the boundaries out loud so Claude isn't guessing at them halfway through the work.
Give it a concrete example. Not a vague vibe. An actual sample of the thing done right, or done wrong. Specificity here saves you three rounds of revisions later.
Let it research and propose a plan before it executes. This is the step almost nobody takes. I ask Claude to look at what's actually working, weigh a few approaches, and bring me a plan before it writes a single word of the final thing. That plan is where the real thinking happens. Approving a plan takes me two minutes. Redoing bad output takes an hour.
Then, and only then, it executes.
This is not blind trust
I want to be clear about something, because people hear "give Claude a goal and let it work" and think I'm telling them to walk away and come back to magic. I'm not. Governance still matters. Caution still matters. I review the plan before execution. I review the output before it ships anywhere. Nothing goes out into PITL, into a client deliverable, into my own name, without me looking at it first.
The difference is where my attention goes. I'm not spending it approving every sentence of a first draft I could have prevented by briefing better. I'm spending it on the decision that actually matters: is this plan right, is this direction right, does this hold up.
Micromanaging Claude at the task level is exhausting and it produces mediocre work, because you're capping its thinking at the size of your instruction. Reviewing Claude at the plan level and the output level is fast and it produces work that surprises you, because you gave it room to actually think.
Why this is the whole ballgame
Here's what I actually believe, and it's why I built a free course around this exact idea before I built anything else. The gap between people who are getting real value from Claude and people who are frustrated by it is almost never a skill gap. It's a briefing gap. It's the difference between "write me a subject line" and a real goal, a real context, a real constraint, and a real example.
I see this in rooms full of smart, capable people who have decided AI "doesn't really work for what I do." It works. They just never gave it enough to work with. They're treating a reasoning system like a search bar.
You don't have to hand over the keys to everything. You don't have to trust blindly. But you do have to stop feeding it fragments and expecting a system.
Give Claude a real goal. Tell it how you think. Tell it what you don't want. Show it an example. Let it come back with a plan. Then let it build.
That's not a hack. That's the actual job now.
